Key Considerations Before Buying Your EV Charger

Posted on Thursday Nov 30, 2023 at 02:55PM in General

The rise of Electric Vehicles (EVs) marks a significant shift in the automotive landscape. One key aspect of owning an EV is having a reliable charger. However, before making that purchase, there are crucial considerations to ensure you're well-prepared.

Determine Your Charger Type

Not all chargers are created equal. Understanding the different types available can greatly impact your charging experience. Are you looking for a Level 1, Level 2, or a faster Level 3 (DC Fast Charger)? Each serves specific needs and comes with varying charging speeds. Level 1 chargers use standard household outlets, while Level 2 requires a dedicated 240-volt outlet. Level 3 chargers are usually found in public charging stations due to their high voltage requirements.

Assess Your Power Capacity

Before installing a charging station at home, it's crucial to evaluate your electrical capacity. Upgrading to a Level 2 charger often requires a dedicated circuit and higher power capacity. Consulting an electrician or utilizing specialized evaluation services can ensure your electrical system can support the charger without causing any issues.

Find Your Best Solution

Once you've determined the charger type and assessed your power capacity, the next step is finding the ideal solution for your needs. Consider factors like charging speed, convenience, and cost. For homeowners, installing a Level 2 charger might offer a faster and more convenient charging experience compared to relying solely on public stations.
